A website, also written as Web site, web site, or simply site, is a set of related web pages containing content such as text, images, video, audio, etc. A website is hosted on at least one web server, accessible via a network such as the Internet or a private local area network through an Internet address known as a Uniform Resource Locator. All publicly accessible websites collectively constitute the World Wide Web.
A webpage is a document, typically written in plain text interspersed with formatting instructions of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML, XHTML). A webpage may incorporate elements from other websites with suitable markup anchors.
WebPages are accessed and transported with the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which may optionally employ encryption (HTTP Secure, HTTPS) to provide security and privacy for the user of the webpage content. The user's application, often a web browser, renders the page content according to its HTML markup instructions onto a display terminal.
The pages of a website can usually be accessed from a simple Uniform Resource Locator (URL) called the web address. The URLs of the pages organize them into a hierarchy, although hyper linking between them conveys the reader's perceived site structure and guides the reader's navigation of the site which generally includes a home page with most of the links to the site's web content, and a supplementary about, contact and link page.
Some websites require a subscription to access some or all of their content. Examples of subscription websites include many business sites, parts of news websites, academic journal websites, gaming websites, file-sharing websites, message boards, web-based email, social networking websites, websites providing real-time stock market data, and websites providing various other services (e.g., websites offering storing and/or sharing of images, files and so forth).
Organized by function, a website may be
- a personal website
- a commercial website
- a government website
- a nonprofit organization website.
It could be the work of an individual, a business or other organization, and is typically dedicated to some particular topic or purpose. Any website can contain a hyperlink to any other website, so the distinction between individual sites, as perceived by the user, may sometimes be blurred. There are two types of website designs:
· static website design
· dynamic website design
Under dynamic website design there are two categories:
1. dynamic code
2. dynamic content

What Is a Website?
A website is a collection of web pages (documents that are accessed through the Internet). A web page is what you see on the screen when you type in a web address, click on a link, or put a query in a search engine. A web page can contain any type of information, and can include text, color, graphics, animation and sound.
When someone gives you their web address, it generally takes you to their website's home page, which should introduce you to what that site offers in terms of information or other services. From the home page, you can click on links to reach other sections of the site. A website can consist of one page, or of tens of thousands of pages, depending on what the site owner is trying to accomplish.
Why Do People Visit Websites?
Generally, people look at websites for two primary reasons:
1. To find information they need. This could be anything from a student looking for pictures of frogs for a school project, to finding the latest stock quotes, to getting the address of the nearest Thai restaurant.
2. To complete a task. Visitors may want to buy the latest best-seller, download a software program, or participate in an online discussion about a favorite hobby.
The main thing to remember in creating a website is that you're not creating the website for you; you already know about the information or service you have to offer. You're creating the site for your visitors, so it should contain the content they want, and be organized in a way that makes sense, even to an outsider.
Conclusion:
A website is a means of communication, and it is only successful when its message is received by the intended user.
I feel that we should use the firs one as intro...we can cut short it and the nxt as how to use a website or what are its uses and stuff...!!
I don’t want this following info(what sort of websites are there?) but still just go through it and see if we can use that..........!!
What sort of websites are there?
There are many sorts of Websites, ranging from a single page "This is us" offering, through to mammoth Websites like the UK Open Government site which has several thousand pages full of information about legislation, taxation, grants and funding, VAT, employment, trade and industry, planning, commerce and so on, together with links to all the government departments and agencies.

Websites may be provided by individuals (in which case they are usually called homepages), special interest groups, such as "The Association of Widget Collectors", educational establishments like universities, or science and research centres, Governments, voluntary organizations, individual retailers, banks and businesses, manufacturers and importers, news, media and financial organizations and multinational corporations. Although the size of the organizations may differ, each has the same opportunity and scope.
A small business can have the same presence and create the same image as a multinational. Each chooses the style and content of its own pages.

Further on the requirement of your company you can choose from two ways for creating dynamic websites.
- Using client-side scripting to change interface behaviors within a specific web page, in response to mouse or keyboard actions or at specified timing events. In this case the dynamic behavior occurs within the presentation.
- Using server-side scripting to change the supplied page source between pages, adjusting the sequence or reload of the web pages or web content supplied to the browser. Server responses may be determined by such conditions as data in a posted HTML form parameters in the URL. The type of browser being used is the passage of time, a database or server state.
